Departmental:
1. In a power plant,
water is transferred at a powerhouse from a reservoir of 40m head through the
turbine. Horizontal thrust 1KN on the fixed vane of the turbine and diameter is
150 mm. Determine the power developed.
2. A pipe has inner & outer radius of ri & ro and a fluid is passing through it with heat transfer co-efficient hi . Surrounding air heat transfer co-efficient is ho, thermal conductivity and length of pipe is K & L, If area is A then draw the thermal resistance network and write down the equation of heat loss.
3. A centrifugal pump
delivers 0.04m3/s of water against a total height of 14m. The
internal diameter of the pipe is 145mm and it is 25m long. If the overall
efficiency of the pump is 62.5%. Calculate the power needed to drive the pump.
Assume the friction factor coefficient is 0.045.
4. A thin walled steel
boiler has a mean radius of 40mm and its thickness is 2mm, assuming the
internal pressure is 25MPa, find out the (i) longitudinal stress, (ii) hoop
stress and (iii) the maximum shear stress.
